Own a Piece of the First Federal Medical Marijuana Program
These original tins and cases once held government-issued cannabis supplied to
Robert Randall—the first legal medical marijuana patient in 1976.
Before dispensaries, before state programs, access to cannabis as medicine came in a very different form.
It was sealed in metal tins and plastic cases, issued by the federal government to a single patient.
Those containers were never meant to last.
They were functional. Temporary. Disposable. But they survived.
What remains are physical evidence of the earliest chapter in the medical marijuana movement.
The Project 50 Collection
Items in the Cannabis Memorabilia Store are part of Project 50—an ongoing effort to preserve and document the first fifty years of the medical marijuana movement.
Over time, a small number of artifacts from the collection are being selectively released to support that work. There are numerous physical items of historic value, including Robert Randall's medical marijuana canisters. There are also T-shirts from various events, and books.
Each piece is original. Each one is finite.
No new items will be created.
Also included in the store listing are numerous digital publications. ALL DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS ARE FREE. This is in keeping with the spirit of Project 50, disseminating as much infomration as possible about the earliest days of the medical marijuana movement.
Featured Artifacts—Limited Availability
These original federal medical marijuana canisters are surviving artifacts from the United States government’s first patient supply program.
Issued to Robert Randall—the first person to receive legal access to cannabis as medicine—they once held approximately 300 government-produced marijuana cigarettes.
What remains is not just a container, but evidence of a system that quietly operated for decades. Each canister comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The older canisters, those from the 1980s, are 5” tall. Later canisters are 7” tall. All are 6” in diameter. All canisters have oxidation and belmishes. And, of course, all canisters are empty and cleaned of any cannabis residue.
These plastic cases were the original delivery form for Robert’s federal marijuana in 1976. They were also used in marijuana research, like that at UCLA where Robert was tested. Each case held 15 marijuana cigarettes, neatly rolled by a cigarette rolling machine donated to the nation’s marijuana research program. These cases are empty and have been cleaned
